My Lord goes before and stands behind me

We’ve reached the finish line for the year! My thoughts always feel jumbled when trying to sort out all the emotions and experiences of another year that’s come and gone. All the highs and lows. All the ups and downs.

What did I learn from it all? How can God make sense of my blunders, and where can I find His hand in my successes?

I was reading Isaiah 52:12 this morning in my KJV Bible and wondered what the old English word “rereward” meant. Was is some kind of reward? But I was putting the emphasis on the wrong part of the word. It doesn’t mean some kind of “re” reward but rather a “rere” or “rear” ward. The NKJV makes this clear.

For you shall not go out with haste,
Nor go by flight;
For the Lord will go before you,
And the God of Israel will be your rear guard.

The song “Whom Shall I Fear” by Chris Tomlin immediately came to mind.

I know Who goes before me. I know Who stands behind. The God of angel armies is always by my side.

Sometimes, we can see God’s clear purpose for our lives, and sometimes, we can’t. Regardless, we can walk softly in faith, knowing that He is always faithful to guide us and that He will go before us this new year – and stand as a guard behind us.

  1. Not only is God our “rereward,” He also does not change (Malachi 3:6, and many more). That means that if he was a rear guard to the Israelites in the wilderness, David during his run from Saul, and countless other examples from scripture, He will be and IS a rear guard for us, too.
