Beautiful: Be-you-to-the-full

BookmarkBeautiful. We girls often use this word to describe a sunset on the beach, a piece of jewelry, a delicate flower, or a dress we’d like to buy. (In my case, it would also include an iced coffee.)

However, we rarely (speaking from personal experience) refer to ourselves this way, and when we do, it is only when we consider ourselves looking our very best – hair and makeup in place.

While there’s nothing wrong with picture-perfect days, I want to suggest that superficial or outward beauty is but a fraction of what being beautiful really means.

Scripture makes clear that inward beauty is much more valuable than an exterior show:

“Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” (Proverbs 31:30, ESV)

“Do not let your adorning be external – the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear – but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.” (I Peter 3:3-4, ESV)

But what does that look like for us today? I’d like to propose that we are truly beautiful when we are ourselves to our fullest potential.

Confucius said, “Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.”

Most people miss, not just the inward beauty, but the potential beauty. By potential beauty, I’m not referring to physical appearance at all. I’m referring to potential. Your potential, my potential, to be the girls God designed us to be – to the maximum capacity possible.

Are you a student? A daughter? A friend? Are you an artist or a musician or a gardener? You fill in the blank.

One of the major problems I see with our culture is apathy. Wherever we are, we simply aren’t all there. Many don’t strive to reach their full potential, because it’s hard work. Hard. Work. Those two words seem like an anathema to some.

But not to us, dear girls, no, not to us! We are going to work hard to be whom God designed us to be. Ourselves. Our be-you-to-the-full selves! Each one of us is uniquely designed by God – handcrafted for a life of purpose.

“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” (Psalm 139:14, ESV)

Yes, Valentine’s Day is coming up this week. Don’t judge your worth on some else’s perception of your beauty. Be yourself, wherever you are, whomever you’re with.

My challenge to you is to print out this post in color and cut out the bookmark. Put it in your Bible. Better yet, print off two, and give the second to a girlfriend or sister or mom. This thing called life distracts us and weighs us down. We need a visual reminder to be ourselves – not to compare ourselves to others or waste the precious gifts we have by wishing to be someone we’re not.

The bottom line: Be beautiful. Be you to the full.

  1. So true!! Life is full of being judged by the opinions of others. But why do we listen to them?? Galatians 1:10 says in a paraphrase by myself that if we are servants of Christ why do we care what others think? Being who God made you pleases God, and that should be enough when we look in the mirror.
