Security is a necessary evil today. Airports, schools and workplaces require identification. You basically can’t leave your house without your driver’s license and important numbers committed to memory.
Our identification goes beyond pictures, documents and cards. We tend to see our identity based on what we do and how we do it. Maybe you receive a sense of self-worth in good grades, a relationship or the job you’ve always wanted.
All those things are good, but when we start to find our identity in them, we’re headed for trouble.
What happens when you fail a test? What happens when you discover Mr. Right is wrong for you? Or where do you turn if the market plummets, and you lose your job?
All of a sudden, you feel lost and wonder what went wrong.
You see, circumstances will go wrong, and people will disappoint us. Of course, we should do our best wherever God has placed us and pursue the dreams He has given us, but these things should never become synonymous with our identities.
The bottom line is that our identity must be in Christ. We are complete only in Him (Colossians 2:10). Only then, our circumstances and fears will lose their hold on us. It won’t matter if we’re a dishwasher at a restaurant or the manager of a store. We will do our best wherever God has placed us, because we understand that whatever we do, we do for Him.
This world has a warped view of priorities. They call us a “somebody” if we make a certain dollar figure or live a certain lifestyle or drive a certain car. All of those things can disappear in an instant.
At the end of the day, the only thing that really matters is Whose we are – not what we have.
So if you’re discouraged with your present situation, peel your eyes off the problems, and look to the Problem-Solver. He’s your Creator, Savior and Father. You are His creation, purchased possession and chosen child.
That’s your real identity.
